Hi Tech Rich Guy Blues

about

I wrote the lyrics to this in the late 90s. The band I was playing with was performing at a nightclub in Montgomery, OH, largely a wealthy area of town. A guy at the bar shouted “Hey, give me some blues!” I looked at him: expensive leather jacket, iPhone sitting next to him, Rolex watch on his wrist, fingers curled around a top shelf scotch, keychain with the BMW logo hanging from his back pocket. Not the usual ‘I’m really down on my luck, woe is me’ blues kind of guy. When I returned home that night, I penned these lyrics to a standard shuffle blues progression. I’ve since played it several times to laughter and applause. This version is much as I’d do it when playing a solo gig: just vocal and guitar backing with a guitar solo in the middle. I've had to modify the lyrics several times since I wrote because technology keeps changing. I think I'm done with that now. I think...

Hi-Tech Rich Guy Blues - Stephen Leigh

My Beamer was hit by a pickup, my Rolex cut my head
Tried to call 911 for help, my iPhone’s bat’ry was dead
I missed the stock market news
I got the hi-tech rich guy blues
Insurance gave me a Ford
Now I’m really bored
I got me the hi-tech rich guy blues

My laptop it quit, my RAM is DOA
Tried to get some on-line help, my wireless is MIA
Can’t search up Google or Yahoo
I got the hi-tech rich guy blues
My dot.com site’s barely alive
I need Facebook and Twitter to survive
I got the hi-tech rich guy blues

Solos

Got cable in my bathroom, a network on my deck
Got Bluetooth on my iPad, yet my life is still a wreck
I don’t have a clue
I got the hi-tech rich guy blues
I got me a great fantasy life
With a smokin’ digital wife
Still got the hi-tech rich guy blues

My mortgage is six figures, got eight rooms I don’t use
My real wife’s a trophy, but she’s sleeping with my masseuse
Life’s a bomb I can’t defuse
I got the hi-tech rich guy blues
My kids could have anything
They want nose rings and tattoos
I got the hi-tech rich guy blues
